There are three basic types of Geothermal Systems. At least one type of system suitable for every location.
Horizontal Geothermal Systems
Horizontal Geothermal Systems involve placing coils of pipe in trenches usually 6-7 feet deep. If you have the space available, then this type of Geothermal System is usually the most economically installed. These are often called a "slinky" system, and will require about 100 feet per ton of heating/cooling capacity.
Vertical Geothermal Systems
Vertical Geothermal Systems are used extensively where land area is limited. Wells are drilled and a pair of pipes connected at the bottom are inserted into the well. The average well depth needed in WNC is about 150 to 175 feet of depth per ton of heating or cooling. In our mountains, vertical Geothermal Systems are somewhat more expensive to install because there is solid rock 20 to 100 feet down almost everywhere in western North Carolina. However, with the tax credits in place until 2016, wells are still very affordable. The real plus for vertical Geothermal Systems is that they can be installed almost anywhere.
Pond/Lake Geothermal Systems
Lake Geothermal Systems are usually very economical to install. If a pond or lake at least 8 feet deep is available, lake loops can utilize the water (rather than soil) for heat transfer. Reduced installation costs are characteristic of this type of loop system. We have a lot of ponds in western North Carolina, and you should give us a call if this option is available to you.
